The GC-14A (on the left) is employed in the detection of hydrocarbons and other common gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. The equipment is equipped with 2 separation columns, one for the separation of larger weight hydrocarbon components and one for the lighter weight gases. The GC uses 2 detectors, the Flame Ionization detector and the Thermal Conductivity detector, the former employed in the detection of higher molecular weight hydrocarbons and the latter in the detection of lighter molecules. The sensitivity of the FID being as high as 1 ppb for selected compounds.
