Membrane Separation
Extensive simulation of membrane permeators is being conducted. Experiments
are under investigation on a novel facilitated transport membrane system for
separation of oxygen from air, carbon dioxide from gas mixtures, hydrogen and
methane from gasification products using coordination complexes is under
investigation.
Simulation of membrane reactors utilizing membrane separations coupled with
chemical reactions, for several reactions has been conducted. Experimental
investigation of the process using ceramic, metallic, and inorganic membranes
is under investigation.
Process Synthesis
Extensive work has been conducted on the synthesis of reaction paths,
arrangement of simple and complex distillation columns, synthesis of reactors,
heat exchanger network synthesis, and development of process flowsheets.
Process Simulation, Control and Optimization
Studies are being conducted on the development of decentralized control
structures, real time simulation of process dynamics, and global optimization
of chemical process systems.
Coal Combustion
Computer simulation of coal combustors, especially circulating fluidized beds,
is being conducted. Experimental studies inlude cold models and actual
bench-scale coal combustors utilizing entrained designs. Nonintrusive sensing
of the combustion environment using optical techniques is also being studied.
